Rating follows blunder rate first

Below 2000, the fastest rating lever is blunders per game — not memorizing another 20 opening moves. Two fewer blunders per game often means 100+ Elo over dozens of games without any new theory.

The improvement loop

  • Play rated games in one main time control (consistency helps Glicko stabilize)
  • Review your worst loss of the day — 15 minutes minimum
  • Drill one tactical theme from that loss
  • Weekly: check phase accuracy — opening vs middlegame vs endgame
  • Monthly: adjust — if openings are fine but endgames collapse, study endgames

Volume vs quality

100 blitz games without review mostly reinforce bad habits. Twenty rapid games with review beat fifty blitz games you forget. If you love blitz, cap it and protect review time.

When to change openings

Change when you repeatedly reach bad structures you do not understand — not because a streamer said the Sicilian is best. One small repertoire you know beats five openings you skimmed.
